sparring helps train reflex, timing etc but teaching tat to beginner is no good cos there is no basics. in kungfu, we believe tat one must train gong 1st, no gong when one reach certain age/level, hard to progress further.
i agree with sifu eric one shd learn to fight after some basics mastery else one will never learn to. but i also think the maxim by taiji means-one shd not start fighting openly till 10 yrs later cos in olden days leitai r usually life & death. my experience is one shd start learning fighting usually 6 to 8 mths after basics. Any legitimate MA shd withstand some resistance, there is a difference between hitting empty air & real impact. but one can never master real impact without hitting empty air 1st. MA is originally a Art of War & still is.
sparring not necessary the one u see in the ring, traditional kungfu sparring is starts lightly & progresses in intensity as one improves
my sifu used to tell me "十年窗下苦练无人识,一朝成名天下知。库
hands conditioning is a bonus is fighting but not really necessary, there are various ways to fight, strength & toughness take back place in higher levels of kungfu.
kungfu only yield results if we spend time & efforts (功夫) just like we court our galfrds & wife or spend years inour academic education.
